The Danube - 5000 BC
This region of the world has produced many successful and relevant examples of ecological design and living.
Nearly 7500 years ago, nomadic people came to a protected ledge along the Danube river. At a wide bend in the canyon and up against protecting north walls, they built a solar tempered village carved out of stone. The walls and roofs were comprised of stretched animal hides. Openings to these tent homes all faced south. They were terraced and didn’t block their neighbor’s sunshine. Tapered in shape, wider to the south, they allowed light and heat to pass through a thin translucent skin aperture onto massive stone floors and benches within.
This is an early example of solar architecture, as w ell as very wise site selection. There was a mild microclimate, with the site protected and sheltered by stone cliffs to the north. The warmth and fertility of the river bottomland enabled these peoples to shed their nomadic existence, and until war, overgrazing and drought finally caused their decline, they lived in this location for a millennium or more. They saw the sunshine and captured it’s power.
